minks are the worlds smallest river otter .
I wouldn’t call them otters.
I live where we have both North American river otters and American mink, and they are very different animals. The otters stay in the water virtually all the time, and the mink use the waterway.
I see Mink in meadows and forested land some distance from the river or lake, but I see otters away from the water only during the absolute worst of the winter, when they hunt rabbits in the snow.
They aren’t otters, though they are very closely related. They are from the Mustelidae family, along with the Otters and Weasels.
Mink are in their own genus in Mustelidae. Originally, this genus Neovison included the European mink.
However, it has since been moved back to Mustela (the genus that includes weasels, stoats/ermines, and polecats). That’s because analysis of the European mink’s DNA found that it was more closely related to polecats than the American mink.
In fact, a European mink and a polecat had a litter of fertile offspring together. Thus, the European mink is a “water polecat.”
They are indeed old bean.
Yes it’s that tricksy convergent evolution at work no doubt.
Though I’d warrant our mink were classified as mink while your mink were still in nappies, by Carolus Linnaeus himself no doubt.
You’ll have to find a name for your mink, our mink quite frankly doesn’t like the name “water polecat” and it would be terribly expensive to have to change all his personal letterheads.
Regards as ever,

I’ve already thought of one, I think we should call them visons. Vison (rhymes with bison) is an archaic name for mink, and in the American mink, it is the species name Neovison vison.
Of course, that name originally referred to the European mink, so deciding which animal get the name is still a bit debatable.
I propose European Mink – Mink, Yank Mink should be called Yink!
