Of course, I thought that was funny.
But I wanted to throw a rock through the TV when I saw this the first time:
One time, I was in a car with my friend from West Virginia. Her Dad called, so she put him on speaker. At first, I felt a little intrusive, but then three minutes into the conversation, I realized I couldn’t understand a single word either of them said.
That’s not the first time I heard of that.
I know of a husband and wife from West Virginia who took jobs in Upstate New York. She was able to moderate her accent a bit, but he never did. When he’d call the school, they have to have her come and translate.
I spend a lot of time making myself sound normal from listening to how normal Americans talk, but this also makes me very susceptible to picking up accents from other people.
She’s lived in northern Viriginia for a number of years, and her accent has faded over time… right up until the moment she started talking to her Dad. It’s like a switch went off in her head.
I have an Irish friend from Kentucky, who once went to a football game in Tennessee with his Dad and a bunch of relatives from the old country. They went to a bar afterward, whereupon the waitress asked why all those Kentuckians had Yankee accents.
I grew up in an immigrant community outside of NYC; we had a substantial number of Indians from Guyana, who spoke English with a ridiculous Caribbean accent. Meanwhile, my very Chinese Dad would speak to the Brazilians in perfect Portuguese. The net result is I have no easily identifiable regional accent to speak of, which I’m actually kind of bummed about. I’m just another boring American-born Asian guy from wherever.
