With a fish tail – it’s gotta be a capybara :)
All joking aside, with “Castozeum” there, it must be a beaver. A very weird, un-beavery beaver.

not that the thing looks anymore like a beaver than a badger. one thing about medievalists: their renditions of living creatures was less than, um, accurate… which is one of many reasons not to trust their depictions of dog breeds/types, either

That lore is hilarious. My guess is that since the valued item wasn’t so much the testes as the scent “glands” that are present in both sexes, that the “look at me hunter I already bit off my nuts so leave me alone” gesture was actually the females deploying their castor sacs.
Interestingly enough, the castor plant/bean/oil gets its name from the beaver as the oil from the bean was used as a replacement for beaver castor which was used in perfumes, etc.
it’s the worst depiction of a beaver i’ve ever seen –
especially the weasel-head, where are the chisel-teeth?
this looks like a stoat head on an odd dog-like body,
and a flattened mermaid tail – even the tail is not a paddle,
but a forked fish-tail.
i think the only part of a beaver the artist ever saw was the pelt. :—-( and they certainly shipped plenty.
dam*ed near exterminated the species, and it still hasn’t recovered across its historic range.
i think many of our water-problems are the result of the demise of the beaver – we are seeing more floods, less groundwater is being stored, more runoff + erosion, and so on; hydrogeologically, beavers are very significant.

I would say that “It’s a terrible depiction” of a speothous venaticus a south american canid whose english I guess it is bush dog.
I think that the legs of this beast are too long for a beaver,the strange tail can be just an artistic licence for an animal that was a new discover in that time.
P.H. this ” fishish” tail has something to do with a bushdog’beahviour erly description-
Anyway in french and italian language an old popular way to name this canid is “chien pecheur”,”cane pescatore”that translate in english more or less as fisher dog.
