Richard Dawkins interviews Wendy Wright (Creationist)

December 1, 2010 by SWestfall3

Source.

This woman is infuriating, but so nice.

From what I can gather, she thinks that only individual humans have unique  DNA– all other organisms have the same DNA.

You may not like that Richard Dawkins is on the left, but he does stick to facts.

She hears facts and her brain says, “Does not compute…”

He’s not being explicitly atheist here at all. He’s giving people of faith who believe evolution some props here.

By the way, I should say that the DNA argument that Dawkins makes here is the best evidence for evolution that exists. Fossils only tell us so much.

There are more parts on Youtube. Here is Part II.

Retrieverman, Please tell me you only listen to this drivel because she has nice hair, a soft voice, and that you had just finished watching the hamster video.

I find no problem between evolution and religion. Maybe that’s because I sometimes have a humourous streak, so I don’t take everything literally.

I don’t much care what other people believe or don’t believe, so long as they also let everyone else believe what they want.

I don’t like people trying to convert me to their religion – but that’s the thing, there are other people’s religious beliefs, but there aren’t other people’s evolution beliefs.

I guess that’s because evolution is not a belief.

I guess I believe what I want, and other people can believe what they want. That is the American way, isn’t it?

    facts don’t have “politics”

The problem with our public discourse is that some people insist on associating facts with political philosophy. It’s the height of intellectual dishonesty to refuse to recognize facts because someone of an opposite persuasion (or religion or culture or citizenship or…) describes it.

“niceness” is a weapon used by too many, usually the stupid.

Saying something stupid/venal/wrong in a nice voice and with a pretty face does not equate to saying something true.

Do we really have to discuss this?

I’ll just say that half way through this Dawkins states what he views as an ideal society in contrast to a society based upon Darwinism.

That is the only reason why I brought it up, mainly to prepare any Libertarians or rationalist conservatives that Dawkins isn’t among their number.

      • on December 1, 2010 at 8:26 pm HDP

So Retrieverman, are you saying that the point of these videos is to discredit RD in the minds of Libertarians and rationalist conservatives?

        • on December 1, 2010 at 8:29 pm retrieverman

No. I’m just saying they need to be prepared for it as they watch this. Dawkins has facts on his side– definitely.

But then he says what he views an ideal society should be. He says it because that woman says Dawkins and Darwinists don’t believe in human dignity.

          • on December 1, 2010 at 8:41 pm HDP

Can you say where in this 10 minute video that this one point is? or are expected to have to listen to the whole thing?

            • on December 1, 2010 at 8:54 pm retrieverman

It is part 3 or 4, not in this 10 minute section.

              • on December 1, 2010 at 9:38 pm HDP

Retrieverman: thank you, I don’t like religious arguements and didn’t want to listen to it again.

What is a Darwinist? There aren’t any socieites designed around Darwin’s writings, so one can’t compare them to any other society, can they?

Is RD a “Darwinist”? whatever that is.

I don’t think that evolutionist have a pope, or any other leader, religious or not. I think it is just a scientific system, not related to any other belief a person might have.

So Dawkins can’t speak for evolutionists as a group, because they aren’t a group.

I said that I had no trouble with religion or evolution. What I have trouble with is history (sorry), once the past is gone, I don’t easily believe any history written about it.

If I found a 3,000 year old clay tablet which said that people were green and had 6 arms and legs, I wouldn’t believe it, I would just think some potter-maker had been eating mushrooms or smoking a weed.

And if you produced a real old letter which said that George Washington was really a woman, I wouldn’t say “See how well woman can do in the military?”, I’d just guess that whoever wrote the letter was wrong.

So when Dawkins says about saying the Romans weren’t real………well, I assume they were, but I admit that I wasn’t there, so I can’t know.

One can only believe, or not believe, in the books, and the teachers who believe in the books, but someone had to commission those books to be written, and whoever that was he probably had a political slant of his own.

But then my personality type is a “P” not a “J” so I am okay with not having definite answers.

No, we have our shaman, or a druide -lol-

                  • on December 2, 2010 at 11:09 pm HDP

                    Hi Bridget,

I don’t think that all evolutionist here are religious. Some are atheist who have no religion at all.

Some religious people believe that God set evolution in motion, so evolution is part of God’s plan.

Other religious people believe that the day mentioned in Genesis means an era or age, or a day in God’s time, not Earth time.

Druids are not common in the US, and I don’t know what they believe about evolution.

Shaman is a term usually used by Native Americans for a spiritual person in their original religion, but little of this is published, although many people are interested.

Some religions reject evolution completely – which I would find hard to do.

Has anyone ever studied the religion of various dog breeders by which breed they have? Are pit bull owners often of a different religion than toy poodle owners?

I personally believe than hybrid/ designer dog/ crossbred breeders might be more intelligent or at least less BSed than those who stick with a system which is obviously wrong – but I’m just guessing on that point.

The post about the coyote dog body language, made me think back to this post.

I had watched part of it without the head phones. Her look is Golden Retrieverish, and I believe that she is clearly flirting with the camera. If you turn off the sound, you can see it.

But if I were a betting person, I’d bet she was real angry. After all, despite the calm and friendly tone, they are argueing religion.

To me it seems that she physically smiles and flirts, but verbally she “turns a cold shoulder” towards Dawkins – that is, I think she often ignores what he is saying.

Dogs don’t usually feel one emotion but broadcast another emotion with their body language.
