I saw some real wildfowl at a local impoundment today.,

A wild mother mallard and her brood:

She is only 2/3 the size of a seven-week-old Rouen, and those ducklings are minuscule.

Also Canada geese with their goslings:

Well, they aren’t really wildfowl, but they are certainly looking part.

011

They survived their first night on the pond very well.

I think the two ducks on the upper and lower left are drakes.  The rest are all hens. The one on the lower left is already getting a green tint to his head feathers.

His bill is also starting to turn yellow. He was one of the feed store ducklings.

The little Rouen that made it through the hatch failure is also doing well. She is as tame as ever.

All five ducklings get a bath! You can tell the Rouen duckling and Rouenoid ducklings have a lot more oil on their down than the pekins do.

Three times this duck has set on the nest. And twice it has ended in the nest being burgled.

But this third time she hid her nest really well, deep in the tall grass.

And now we have babies!

Of many colors!

Phil has flown the coop, but these are his children.

Yesterday, there were five, but this morning when I went out to take pics, there was a cheeping sound in the tall grass near the nest.

After digging around a bit in the grass, I found some down.

And the down moved.

And I pulled this thing out of the grass:

I got it back with the rest.

They are almost twice the size they were last week.

And they are so messy. That water is the same color as their starter/grower mash, which they ferry from their food tray to their bathing/drinking pan in their bills and on their down.
