If that’s the illustration I think it is, I’ve got it labeled a Barbet in one book and a waterspanial in another.

  Actually, both of those are wrong. The dog in question is given a full name and location in the text, so I have to accept that this is the right identity of the dog. It’s not intuitively obvious.

If the drawing is accurate, the hair on the tail and ears appears to be wavy rather then curly as the rest of it is, so I would guess a Portuguese Water Dog of the all-black, curly-coated variety.

I take back flat-coat–not because of the curliness, but b/c of the topline.
