Evolution is a scientific theory. (What a scientific theory is. Evolution is not ‘just a theory” in the more common usage of the term).
Do I have to explain why the crocoduck thing is such a red herring?
But I will have to say that some state senator in Oklahoma thinks this is valid evidence against evolution. He calls it a “phyla cross-over.” I believe this is a rectally derived term, which makes him sound a whole lot smarter than he actually is.
If one gets a good look at the crocoduck, I can say they made an error there. The crocodile head isn’t a crocodile. It is either an alligator or a caiman.

I’ve read a couple of interesting books arguing from Biblical scripture in defense of an old earth, and a non-literal reading of Genesis. I mean, those people DO exist. Perhaps not in the world of the Fundamentalist, however…

Virtually all the main line protestant churches and the science advisor to the current pope accept evolution.
I was raised in a conservative evangelical home, and I believed Young Earth Creationism when I was a kid. We were taught all the arguments for it in (private) school. But since I’ve always loved biology and science from a young age, and did a lot of research and reading outside the religious bubble, I came to the point where it was just untenable to keep believing that evolution was wrong and the earth is only 6k years old. The idea that there’s some kind of evil conspiracy by scientists to attack God by making stuff up is just ludicrous.
Fundamentalism is something that will kill religion in the long run.

I was raised in the mainline Methodist and Episcopalian traditions.
Once a religion gets too organized, it’s hosed. It becomes all about control and money and political power. Martin Luthor had the right idea, but the Reformation didn’t go far enough imo.
