The dog on the right is a cross between a low content wolf dog and a Labrador. The dog on the left is his son, produced through mating with a black Labrador mix.
Here is the low content wolfdog with his grandson and “daughter-in-law.”
My guess is the majority of the litter were black, but this one wasn’t. There also had to be a gene for the black mask in the Labrador mix mother.
NB: I use the term “wolfdog,” rather than wolf hybrid. Dogs and wolves are part of the same species, Canis lupus, and can’t technically be hybrids. However, crosses between dogs and coyotes and crosses between wolves and coyote would be hybrids.

Interesting color. It mirrors the blue color in some Salukis.
I’ve been ruminating on the color since I posted this.

Stealth black Salukis.
I’m stealing that name Mishmish (apricot) for a golden retriever.
What’s the source of this info? I’m insanely curious. Also, those puppies of freakin’ adorable.

I’m glad you got me to do this. I had to rework part of the post through a misreading.
Happens more than you think :)
I read that forum to keep up on the ‘pet owners view.’ It can be extremely entertaining at times.
Without actually knowing the genetics, I wouldn’t necessarily count that as a black mask. In stealth black Salukis, the face is often very dark (see pictures from von Iransamin kennel above, also Karun.) This is part of the genetics that keep black from expressing as black, but it is not a mask and not inherited like one.
Wow, that’s an interesting hybrid. They don’t really have a wild look. Puppies are really cute
Before the mid 1800s, Newfoundland dogs were referred as “wolf dogs”. I think that cross looks terrific.

I just lost my dog that looks exactly like the one on the left. Do you know where I can get another male?
Best dog we ever had. Let the grandchildren roll all over him.
Thanks,
Linda
Do you know where I can get another male wolfdog lab?
I have no idea. Most people who intentional breed wolf hybrids breed wolves to wolf-like dogs, so that the offspring look more like wolves.
These are beutiful dogs. Would you happen to be breeding wolf hybrids? I am looking for half wolf and half lab.
A very good for breeders of dogs, The Art of Breeding Better Dogs by Kyle Onstott.
Probably not the best book, seeing as it doesn’t mention things like the importance of maintaining DLA haplotypes.
That’s the key issue that is missing from almost every book on breeding dogs.
The best current writer on dog breeding that I pay attention to is Jess Ruffner.
Jess should write a dog breeder guidebook. =)
Better, much more science-based source, are Jeffrey Bragg’s articles:

If you’re trying preserve an old breed type, you really need to pay attention to the science and practical solutions on this site.
Of course, all dog breeders ought to know this stuff, but the traditionally breeding practices are so full of malarkey and misinformation.
retrieverman,
Is there any chance that you would be selling any of the puppies that u have pictured above??
No. They aren’t my dogs, and I am not a breeder anyway.
Most of the wolfdogs I’ve encountered have been EXCEPTIONALLY spooky, and useless in terms of training. But then again, I might be getting the problem wolfdogs that are more wolfy than doggy.
I should hope that a retriever wolf cross would be more biddable.
But if you want a wolfy looking dog, why not just get a Malamute or something, which is far less likely to piss GALLONS of stinky pee in fear every time a stranger approaches (seen that) eat your cat (seen that) eat your walls (seen that) and eventually jump your fence and disappear forever (that’s what happened in the end).
Beautiful photos!
