These two dogs are rescues, which is one reason why there is some matting on the longer-haired dog.
Long hair is a recessive trait that pops up in any number of short-haired breeds.
In English bassets, it was likely introduced through cross-breeding with spaniels, which themselves may have some basset ancestry– like the Sussex.
However, its basset ancestry may predate the English basset’s development, so it might have one of the French bassets crossed in.
Haha, I was just telling someone today about these guys. I think they are gorgeous, though not ideal for breed standard of course.

This actually isn’t my breed, and I don’t know if anyone breeds them at all.
No one deliberately breeds them (and apparently when people have tried they don’t breed true), but they do pop up occasionally even in well-bred litters. You just have to keep your eyes open and ear to the ground. I’ve seen some turn up in rescue too.
