Yesterday, a Dogue de Bordeaux named Marley collapsed on her way out of arena at Crufts.
She died shortly thereafter. The diagnosis was laryngeal paralysis, something you might have heard about on this blog. (Miley no longer has any paralysis of any sort.)
Of course, this disorder can affect virtually any breed at any time.
One cannot blame this on breeding or anything else.
It just happens.
So please don’t use this story to attack the problems of dog shows.
It is not intellectually honest.

I don’t know–the disorder is known to be genetic in certain breeds. Not sure about the Dogue…
I don’t think it is genetic in that breed. No one has proven it.
Congenital LP does exist as an inherited condition. I don’t think that’s what this dog had.

i lost a dog to this 30 years ago. i still blame myself as she was trained with “choke chain” as they were called then. the vet explained it was scar tissue from over use of the chain many years before. at that time i new no different. never used one since. seeing so many dogs showing with these barbaric razor wires oiked up high on the neck “to keep the head up” makes me sick and very sad.
