   I`m open to show bred dogs as long as they still have energy and drive,and don’t have horrible conformations.
   The extreme energy and drive a working Border collie is not a good fit for me. I think I`m most attracted to sporting dog breeders,their less insane then working ones yet better off then the show or just pet versions. I do have a high respect for working dogs though.

   Not a great quality pic but a nice Golden I saw at a agility trial.

     I’ve heard and seen opposite results; workers more calm than sport dogs. The reasoning is that in real life, a working dog needs to be calmer to achieve it’s goal throughout the day. Both dogs benefit from focus but when your job lasts for hours and not minutes in short bursts ( as is the case for most sporting events), you need to pace yourself and not make your “boss” wanna kill you! :)

     I’ve seen some wacky Border Collies just for example, but I had the pleasure of meeting a farmer in Scotland and his many BCs. They spent a good deal of time in small kennels but when they came out, were happy and waggy but not insane, not chasing all in sight, approached people with manners. Then I was treated to a herding demo.

     We discussed BCs and the rep they have with a lot of folks for being too nutty. He said he could never live or work with crazy dogs. They need to be calm so they can do their job right.

       And the dogs that have a daily outlet for all their energy and working desire, will be more satisfied and less “hyper” on their hours off. Lots of working/sporting dogs act like idiots largely because they have no way to release that intensity. Like the guy in our obedience class with the overenthusiastic (to put it mildly) irish Setter– said setter spent 22 hours a day in an 8 x 8 foot kennel pen, was uncontrollable on lead. After the owner hired a high school athlete to run the dog 5 miles each day, and personally spent time twice daily in training the dog, the dog improved immensely, became a lovely dog in the house and elsewhere.

   The photo is a bit of a bad comparison, apart from maybe the huskies. Showing the collie and golden side on in a similar pose would have been a better example. Saying that, all the dogs on the right look a little short in the leg for my liking.

   I don’t see things as clean cut towards one aspect of the dog world. There’s good and bad, responsible and irresponsible in all sectors, be it the show scene, the sporting dog world, pet breeders and even the genuine working dogs. As long as the breeder produces physically/mentally sound dogs and puts them in the right home rather than the first one that comes along with a wad of cash, the strain it’s from is irrelevant.

   Well, in hunt tests judging and competing, I’ve seen some from the right side of that image… and I don’t only prefer what’s on the left, I’m totally devoted to it… but you all knew about that already… !

   I noticed that in so many dog breeds,why are dogs with short legs so appealing to them? Soon enough only sight hounds will have long legs.

     Not just dogs – cats are now bred with short legs too. I just find it ugly.
