This dog was bred by a Peruvian dog breeder (or more likely, a Peruvian dog dealer) named “Sharpei Juliuss,” who apparently has decided to push the defective and feverish sha-rpei phenotype as far as it will go.
This dog cannot open its eyes all the way, and while it certainly wouldn’t be wining prizes at any dog shows, there are very idiotic people who think breeding such extreme dogs is a wonderful thing.
This dog is not the only one that this breeder is producing.

The shar-pei breed has a lot of problems.
It is derived from a very small gene pool. When I was a kid, this was “the world’s rarest dog,” and within a decade, I saw them in pretty decent numbers in West Virginia, which is nowhere near where they originated.
So someone had to be cranking out these rarities at a pretty strong clip to get them on the pet market in here in America.
And that’s only its genetic structure.
The dog itself is often bred to such extreme with its wrinkles that many puppies have to have their eyelids tucked up so they can both see and not have their eyelids raking against their eyes.
This is what happens when the only thing you care about is what a dog looks like.
Dog breeders can produce all sort of different morphological traits in their dogs, but at some point, it becomes cruelty– cruelty that in the amount of suffering actually exceeds that of dog fighting.
This is dog production without empathy.
It’s nothing more than perverse vanity masquerading as something noble.
It’s really pretty sickening.
Some years ago, when AKC announced that it was planning to accept the Shar-Pei as a recignized breed, several people wrote them to object to, among other things, the common practice of surgically correcting the eyelids. Response from an AKC bigwig was that the breed’s parent club had assured AKC that that would not be happening. Hah.
But no AKC judge would dare give any award to that monstrosity in the first photo. It is effectively blind, for one thing.
It would be an insult to the dog fancy to say they approve of this sort of thing.
This nothing more than very crass vanity in the quest of a buck.

When I first opened this page I only saw the top part of the shar pei in the first pic, I honestly thought it was one of those weird mushrooms that you sometimes see. The poor thing i feel so sorry for it.

The modern Meatmouth type in my opinion is worthless and breeding them should just stop, introducing Bonemouth in them is great but only adds value to the Meatmouth, nothing good is added to the Bonemouth side from such crossbreeding.
actually the kennel club are working with breeders to minimise health problems now. it is a fault to have too excessive skin rolls… things are slowly improving but there will always be stupid cruel people like this whom are taking advantage of these dogs.

As with the Neo, the cosmetics are awful. But cosmetics are just the tip of the iceberg of breed health problems. The Finnish KC database gives the average age of death for the breed as 4 yr 11 mo. Of the 60 deaths for which they have data, only 3 were from old age (natural death or euthanasia). 9 died from accidents or euthanasia due to behavioral problems. 8 cancer, 4 urinary tract problems (avg 3 yr 11 mo).
The breed is pretty effed to begin with. More so than, say, the pug. It’s sad that people are breeding to make them hideously ugly and physically handicapped as well.
