   Let’s not forget that dogs are sometimes targetted in Germany for preying on game animals.

     It is illegal to shoot dogs unless they are worrying livestock. This is private property, and the dog has permission to be there. Our model of wildlife conservation is that all wildlife is publicly owned and managed by the state, but most property in the East and Midwest is privately owned. So if the landowner says dogs can be on the land, no one can shoot them. We have public lands for hunting and recreation, and it’s a case by case thing whether dogs can run on them. We cannot take dogs into restaurants or most public areas unless they are service dogs, but in the wilder areas, they have a lot of freedom.

       Keep in mind that I’m talking about Germany where there are reports of hunters shooting dogs whenever they attack deer.

         We have a different land/conservation model than Germany. In some states, you can hunt dogs with deer (it’s the same as the driven hunt in Europe), but in most, you cannot. I do know that hunting areas in Germany don’t allow pet dogs to wander on them, but I’ve been in German cities that are full of dogs in places where you’d never see a single one here.

           These are based on reports I’ve read where dogs in Germany can get targeted for hunting deer whenever they stray (streunende/freilaufende/wildernde hunde und rehe) and that dog poisoning is a big deal in Germany. Look no further than the website Giftkoeder Radar which alerts dog owners and on the other hand, there are anti-dog media like Gegenhund (antidog) and Kot und Koeter. Germany might not be that dog-friendly if it weren’t for frequent reports of dog poisoning and why it’s such a big deal as to dedicate an entire website to it (Giftkoeder Radar).
