The mink article is here. The American mink is the only true species of mink still in existence. The rare and endangered European mink is actually closely related to the polecat with which it can hybridize and produce fertile offspring. The polecat is the ancestor of the ferret, which was kept by people in Eastern Europe to keep rats and mice out of the grain, hence the name “polecat.” This name has unfortunately been given to the striped skunk. Skunks were once weasels or mustelids, but are now considered to be in their own family, Mephitidae.
