Tips for Dealing with Hyperactive Dogs

Regular off-leash exercise, including playing with other dogs, is good way to deal with "hyperactive" dogs.

This is an article of mine. As you know, I like high energy dogs, so I hate the term hyperactive.

Please consider the dog’s energy level before choosing one.

   IMO, your article does not emphasize mental exercise sufficiently. I could take a dog from a breed with some territorial instincts, put it in a fenced corner yard with a fair amount of traffic going by and end up with a muscularly fit dog. it’s still going to be crazier than a bedbug even if it is capable of being in nonstop motion for hours and hours.

   Mental fatigue from using the brain is a good thing. (although you do need to be careful what you teach the dog. For example, if I decide to teach the dog to fetch me a cold beverage, I’m going to store the cold beverages in a cooler, not the refrigerator.

     Well, I tried to get that as one solution.

     But I had a stupid Dalmatian a few years back that mental stimulation wouldn’t work. He had to be run, run, run, run, run. He even wore out a very active field bred golden of mine, just trying to get her to play with him, and that golden, I thought, was a very active dog.

     Yes, mental stimulation is important, but if you’ve got a really dumb dog that is active on your hands, you just have to run them.

     The dog was not deaf at all. He could hear. He just had no brains. He just ran all the time.

   I agree with kabbage. Mental workouts are very underrated. I’ve found that when combining the mental with the physical, their behavior and their ability to learn is night and day. And my dogs are not inactive breeds: two chihuahuas, one italian greyhound/jack russell.

     Jack Russells are a working breed with very high energy.

     I did put things in that article wanting agility and fly-ball activities.

     Of course, you can do what I do: I have access to a 70 acre farm where dogs can run off leash.
