   Now this doesn’t seem as if there is really not much to the training. Don’t all Retrievers do this? I never have issues getting my dogs to do such things. In fact my spaniels will do this. I’m going to have my spouse film this weekend as I take each out in turn to do the same. Retriever, then Hybrid, then spaniel. If we aren’t distracted with other things we should have some interesting footage for you.

   Is the hard part supposed to be getting the dog to stay calm when the gun goes off? Or is it the retrieving?

     This is Birtish training– more hands off than what we do over here.

     And no, they don’t all do this.

     The retrieving is supposed to be a natural drive. However, not all dogs have it or they have it in such that they require some special training to get them to fetch to hand.

     Guns are introduced during the critical period for socialization, before the onset of fear response, which is at about 8 weeks.

     However, you can train even a gunshy adult do to love the sound of a gun going off.

   Does Training to bolt off to retrieve at the sound of a cap gun suffice? Or Should I be using something louder?

     Actually, you don’t want them to bolt off at the sound of a gun. You want them to remain sitting until you say their name. Saying their name is the cue for them to go out and bring it back. Starter pistols are usually what is used. You usually have to train them not to bolt after a mark has been thrown, and they have to also be taught to carry both live and dead birds in their mouths as marks.
