strange bulldog type

This one might be a bit of a shocker. It’s a Boston Terrier.

based on the apparent vintage of the photo: a fat American Pit Bull Terrier (I have one that’s undershot like that) or possibly a Boston bull terrier (or what some people are calling a “Boston bulldog”)

I’d guess “bulldog” as that was the common name in this country in the 18th-mid 20th century for most of what we would call pitbulls today. Hence the reason “english” was tacked onto the british KC and AKC version.
sadly, by the time photography was in force, the genes for long tails were gone from the “english” bulldog gene pool.

I was going to guess Boxer but since you said “shocker” I might go with something else. Maybe Collie or Westie. ; )
