She left 99 (!) St. Bernards alone while she went on a trip to Tenerife (Canary Islands–ironically the “Dog Islands.”) Of course, it appears that the dogs were severely neglected leading up that trip.
Her defense counsel argued that she was well-respected in “dog breeding circles,” whatever that means.
I agree retrieverman. The sad thing is that while Mary Collis is locked away she will have clean water, nourishing food and a clean place to live, her dogs received much less. Bravo to the courts for having enough sense to impose a custodial sentence. Though depression is a terrible illness it’s no defence for such a vile act.
There has to be some documented mental disorder that causes this behavior. How many times must we see this same story? It seems to be almost cliche. A large scale breeder, female, 40-60, hoarder, recent decline in health or money. Once respected, or at least acknowledged in the “community.”
Not that this doesn’t happen with young rich men. It’s just, I’ve yet to read about one.
I am surprised that they did not charge the partner, as well, for complicity, aiding and abetting the breeder. Surely, the partner is as responsible for this a she is.
I wonder why. That is a very good question.
