   Funny, when I saw FCINO, I was thinking that the ad would be about a golden colored Flatcoat. heh. Flat Coat In Name Only. LMFAO. As long as we’re talking flatcoats, is there any reason that they are a “different breed” than goldens except color? My mostly ignorant take is that it’s simply people who didn’t want to give up the black when some other people decided that retrievers shouldn’t be black.

     The yellow dogs were given their own color class in 1908, but they couldn’t win against the black dogs.

     So they made up crap that the dogs were from Russia.

     I don’t think the KC would have let the yellow/red dogs split off without a good story of some sort. And as far as I’m concerned it is the best ever contrived. I mean here was a strain of dogs that had a very detailed pedigree and firm grounding within the bloodlines of some of the top flat-coated retrievers in the early days of the breed (which included dogs that belonged to the president of the KC!) And people believed that story for over a half century!

     Unfortunately, the black is the dominant color, and the black flat-coat was the retriever in Britain until the First World War. And it was not unusual for black dogs to carry yellow, even when they were registered as flat-coats.

     The two breeds are different now, although I would say they are a theme and variation on the same dog. If I wanted an obedience dog, I’d get a golden. If I wanted a retriever that might have some pointing abilities, I would be more likely to get that in the flat-coat.

     Now, your previous comment (in the Margaret Atwood post) is going to take some time for me to answer properly.

       So how {sad, ironic, noteworthy} is it that the Recessive fringe strain is now more popular and arguably healthier than the dominant-Dominant group?

       I think it speaks to the danger of endless division into smaller and smaller gene pools.

       It’s also interesting to see just how different a dog you can create from the same gene pool without (I assume) significant outcross. As far as I know the rough and smooth collies are simply a division based on coat, likewise without significant outcross after the split, and yet those two varieties have other distinct differences.

       Well, California has such liberalized marijuana laws and doesn’t enforce them, so my guess is that she is playing the younng professional Republican who likes to smoke pot and has good broadband access.

       I think you have to be stoned to understand it.

       If the Republicans are sheep, all Barbara Boxer has to do is get a couple of border collies or English shepherds. It she really wanted to win, she could always hire coyotes.

   I worked for HP during the Carly years. They were demoralizing to the employees and fiscally draining for the company. She is an extremely bright woman, but she really wants to make sure you fully.understand.how.much.more.clever.she.is.than.you.

   Christopher, rough and smooth collies can and are interbred as they are varieties rather than breeds. I *think* the corgis developed in different areas mostly independently, although the physical differences are relatively small.

     Rough and smooth collies are separate breeds in the UK and within the FCI system
