   Have you seen this Slate article about the Plott Hound?

   My first thought was, “Why on earth would anyone want to show these dogs?” My second thought was, “How long until they get ruined?”

   To Independent George– IF Plott Hounds ever have much of a conformation show following(cringe), they will develop into two distinct types–actual hunting dogs, and show dogs, just like, alas, so many other breeds. As a longtime afficiondo of American-developed trail hound types, I can’t help but be curious(even if I really wish AKC recognition would never blight these breeds’ histories) as to just HOW the conformation show people will change and exagerrate their wretched examples of these hounds. And the marvelous, fanciful stories of their origins that will surely develop! One reason they are such superior hunting dogs is because they are unexagerrated in any way. Will the Plotts, Blueticks, and Redbones be bred to have pointlessly, enormously long ears and loose skin, and be so oversized they can no longer run far or fast, and overheat easily, as the AKC version of the Black-And-Tan coonhound has? In that case, anyone that really hunts coons(or anything else) with Black-And-Tans gets UKC or unregistered dogs bred for HUNTING, NOT conformation shows. I guess the AKC FINALLY took notice of the kuhzillions of coonhounds that might add to their coffers in registration fees! But let’s hope the hunting crowd does as it always has, and shows little interest(yea–great disdain!) for conformation shows and their “standards”!
