   Hey! This animal looks a lot like the wolf dog Jed on “Journey Of Nattie Gan” and “White Fang”! I know the real Jed is long ago in dog heaven now, but maybe his trainer has some more animals, and has been reduced to simulating wolf attack recreations for National Geographic? Well, ya gotta pay the dog food bill somehow…..But seriously, folks, it really does need to get out there that JOGGING in the areas where there are large predators is just asking for it–at least pack a pistol or a good sturdy walking stick, preferably sharpened at one end! Just having such a defensive weapon will give a person a certain confidence and posture that is NOT prey-like, and will discourage potential attacks. If attacks still occur, by gosh, you have something to fight back with! I carry such a “spear stick” whenever I am just walking where there are lots of loose, potential biters among neighborhood dogs–it looks innocent enough as a walking stick, but a solid hardwood pole can pack quite a wallop, and the confidence it gives you alone is usually apparent in your posture and body language, so that you will rarely or never need to use it. With the return of larger predators to many areas, people need to relearn what our Paleo ancestors practiced–your spear; don’t leave home without it!

   the film is a recreation. The problem I have with the account is the “minor wounds” the man sustained. IF this wolf had been SERIOUS, why wasn’t the man more seriously injured? A K-9 dog in an attack would have certainly inflicted some severe injuries right through a parka. Wolves have more bite strength and longer canines.
   I can believe the “attack”. I just question that this incident was as serious as it’s made to be. Did the wolf see him as an intruder rather than prey?
   I’ve always felt the difference in attack behavior in wolves between N. America and Europe is that by the time white men came to America, they had guns and wolves aren’t dumb. While attacks on American Indians were known, wolves would have figured out pretty fast that being in rifle range was NOT smart. In Europe, wolves were around long before people had a good means of long range defense, particularly poor people such as serfs or peasants.

   Peggy Richter; it was probably because the wolf was inexperienced in attacking humans–the clothing may have baffled it and kept it from biting down very hard(unlike a trained attack dog with lots of experience doing this). Many wild predator attacks on humans are rather inept compared to their swift efficiency with more “natural” prey. And they rarely live long enough in places like the U. S. or Canada to hone their skills!
