   You gotta love it: “why is that desirable?”
   “It just is”

   I love the temperament of bassets, but loathe the extensive health issues. Its too bad, they are sweet souls. They don’t deserve jack wagons who just want to see flabby stubby useless dogs in the ring.

   That crack about breeders’ “lucrative incomes” is weirdly funny. When I was breeding (maybe one litter a year) after the cost of food, veterinary care, housing, all the exams for hips, eyes, hearts, entry fees at various events, travel expenses, advertising, donations to dog-related charitable organizations, etc, …..I figured that the pay for my time involved with dogs was about 8 cents an hour. Lucrative, oh sure…..

   There are apparently Bassets (not Basset/beagles or European line Bassets) that do hunt. video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFdqPPKZBdc
   Can’t say I’m overwhelmed by the hunting ability, but the dogs are clearly much more functional than the “bench” type Bassets.

     What is wrong with the hunting abilities of the Basset Hound in general? Nothing.
     In the video, the dogs are young and it shows of course.

     These “Low Dogs” were created when slower proceeding in the field was needed.
     Basset Hound is actually the same dog as the Bloodhound and as good hunter. Only much slower and not so far-reaching, which can be good points in a hunt, in several ways.

       If you’re following the hounds on foot, bassets are useful. They won’t run as fast.

       In my part of the world, a short-legged dog is a liability. Running up and down steep hills and mountains is very hard on short-legged dogs.

       The show bassets have very loose skin, and that tends to get cut to pieces in the briers.
