Not according to the Chuckchis in Siberia–your dogs will actually be waiting for you at the entrance to heaven when you die, and if you abused any of them in your lifetime, they will prevent you from entering the Happy Hunting Grounds! This is a cultural belief you would expect from a people that relied so heavily on their dogs for survival.
