The caption is quite interesting. Compared to other toy breeds, I think one could say the same about the Japanese chin today.

Yes, I’m very impressed at how the Chin folks have kept their breed true to it’s original type for so long. Not all breeds can claim such a feat!
As an interesting sidenote, when I was at the dog show a few months back, I chatted with a woman who had been a judge for 20 years or so, and who seemed quite knowledgable about many breeds. She said that the Japanese understood that a Chin needs a little bit of nose, and not a completely flat face like the Peke has (even though Chins are pretty smushfaced in general). She said a common fault in Western Chins was a face that was ‘too flat’…. though I’m sure the line between ‘too much’ and ‘too little’ nose is very fine.
Probably very hard to breed, too, the ‘just right’ nose, not too much, not too little.
The dog on the right looks like it might have been given a bit to much rice wine as a pup.
