I can see these becoming a huge rage in Japan.

Yeah, quite likely. But how malleable will they be as adults? They seem to be much like racoons in habit and probably have many of the same characteristics. They’re also primarily solitary thus won’t have the social drives that make dogs such a good match fro people. All-in-all, I suspect that it would be a very short-lived craze. BTW: the shopka I got while I was in the Urals is made of raccoon dog fur. Its quite cozy–very nice fur but not as silky as red fox.
