I just watched a show on Nat Geo Wild about women who keep pet monkeys, which they call “monkids.” These monkeys bite their human children and get diabetes from eating too much junk food. So yeah, you don’t need a pet monkey.
But I think Richard Pryor did a better job than I ever could of explaining why you really don’t need a pet monkey:

It is what i call “The Hagrid Complex” ,named after Hagrid the half giant in Harry Potter movies. Some peope just are not happy with a nice poodle or beagle. They don’t want a popular little pussy or nice little goldfish. No they want a 3 headed dog or a dragon, but since dragons are hard to come by, and 3 headed dogs are rare, they buy a monkey or a wild animal or a giant whatever.
But there are good reasons why retrievers are popular, why people keep goldfish, and why a kitten becomes a beloved pet. Thess animal fit into our lives, and don’t cause the problems and efforts of exotic pets. But to each their own – just know what you are getting into and NEVER impulse buy an animal especially an exotic one.
WTF is wrong with people? That’s almost as bad as having “living dolls” that are super realistic and these old broads carry them around in bassinets and pretend they are living infants. It reminds me of bitches with false pregnancies mothering stuffed toys. It’s weird.
The doll people, at least, aren’t harming a living thing with their ‘hobby’. I can forgive ‘victimless’ weirdness much easier than people who contribute to the abuse of primates.
Those monkid people are something.
The monkey is a cute little baby that runs around and bites everyone.
But he’s just so cute!
