Bulldogs are pathetic swimmers. It’s a good thing this one is wearing a flotation jacket.
Golden retrievers, on the other hand, are pretty close to a dog evolving into a marine mammal. They may not be the best example– Chesapeakes and Labs hold that distinction– but they are much better designed for swimming than the modern bulldog.
Now, some bulldog relatives are much better swimmers.
Here are reader Terra Presotto’s White English bulldogs doing a retrieve from water:
Though they aren’t as “light in the water” as the golden retriever, they are much better swimmers than the bastardized bulldog.

Bulldogs are really amazing and their skills are also magnetic, they can swim in ocean better than human.
Magnetic, does that mean that iron filings collect on them?
Actually, they are crap swimmers. They are designed in every way to be a poor swimming animal. They are broad in the chest with no stream-lining whatsoever. They also have no real tail, which other dogs use as a rudder. They are also more muscle than fat. Muscle is more dense than fat, so they sink.
And then their whole fucked up breathing problems mean they have hard time catching breaths as they swim.
A bulldog cannot swim as well as a human. Indeed, most dogs are inferior in the water compared to a human.
They are also top-heavy, and easily capsize and drown.
Like this dog almost does:
It is negligent to let a bulldog swim without a flotation jacket.
They are not water dogs.
more succinctly, bulldogs are sinkers, not swimmers
As an inveterate “sinker”, I can identify w/ that.
I note that the Bulldog in the top video is considerably more prognathous than the dogs we’ve been seeing of late. Its nice to know that they’re not all quite as extreme as the show dogs.
