If she can hold on command then she can be trained for a formal retrieve through backchaining. I’ve met many dogs that have absolutely zero drive to retrieve that were trained to do so through this method. However, it’s not really fun for the dog (or for the handler) if they don’t have the drive to begin with.
Yeah its a lot of work. If one really wants/needs a retriever, its a lot easier to just go out and get another dog and allow the non-retrieving dog to be a companion.
Maybe you owe it to her to train her. What if she’s sitting there wondering why she’s sitting there holding a decoy.
