   What do you think about the stories that dozens of pugs and cats were killed in the making of this film? Is that true?

     I have seen it, and it does appear to have several scenes during which animals were injured or possibly killed. I was intrigued by your question and researched it a bit with google. Almost everything I found supports the accusations of animal cruelty during the filming. Here is one of many links with more detail:

       I know it was done in the days before CGI and realistic animatronics , so what you see on screen really happened.

       Just that clip was horrible. The cat was very afraid and the I swear the poor pug and bear were tied to the river bed in one shot as it looked like they were both struggling. I thought the bear was going to break the pug’s neck over that tree branch. I watched another couple of clips and the whole movie seems to consist of physically throwing animals at one another, down holes, in water etc… I wonder if the crew list goes Make up artist, Dolly Grip, Best Boy, Pug Chucker.

     Internet legend says the filmmaker also threw a live cat off a cliff during the making of the film. I don’t know if it’s true or not.

   Holy crap. It seemed mostly like the bear and the pug just really didn’t want to be there at all, and were mostly just trying to exit stage left.
