Is there any evidence of disease affecting your local tree species?
Only ash trees. The ones without leaves don’t turn colors. They just drop them.
What about hemlocks & white pines? (Adelgids & bark beetles, respectively?) I’m beginning to see a lot of bark beetle devastation among white pines locally. The hemlocks seem to be holding their own here, so far.
The adelgids here seem to have come and gone. We had them for several years (I had to use a systemic on my trees) but haven’t seen a trace of them in the last 2 years. Of course it comes too late for the native hemlocks in the Smokies. Dogwood Anthracnose, Spruce Budworm–especially on Blue Spruces and, in some locations, Sudden Oak Death have been problems as well.
On the plus side bird/squirrel-planted chestnuts seem to be springing up here and there. I assume that they’re scions off the hybrid, resistant trees the local municipalities have been planting of late.
