I’m talking about the man-made bell:
Why is this moose wearing a bell?

This “Moose” which looks to be the Scandanavian version and is therefore called an “elk”. This one is domesticated so the bell will tell the foresters this one is not fair game.
It is a European one. I’ll give you that.
It’s an “elk,” but keep in mind that “elk” means something else in North America.
And yes a bull moose does have what is called a bell, which is piece of skin that hangs from his lower jaw.
Hejsan Kenneth!
Elks are so fine and huge animals as everyone can see.
Thanks to R. for the beautiful photo.
Yes indeed I hunt American Elk, or Wapiti as it is better known in Europe, and I am very familiar with our version of the “moose”
It’s a pet moose! Okay, I have no idea, but I’ll bet Kenneth is very close or spot on.
So you can hear where it’s to, same as cow bells.
Because it’s a dairy moose.
A cow “moose” would be OK for domestication, but a Bull “moose” would be problematical during the rut they get real interesting and can be dangerous to be around. I have been fly fishing in Moose country here in Wyoming and I have had besotted Bull Moose take off after me if he thinks I am after a cow he is wooing. :) In Wyoming we have the Shiras moose which is the smallest of the 6 subspecies. As long you watch out these hormone soaked goofballs are more entertainment then danger.

i dunno about that, kenneth –
there have been many injuries over the years from bulls, but also from cows with calves at heel, or calves nearby, lying in the brush.
just a couple years back, a student at a US-university was killed by a cow when the student passed by the dam + calf while going to a classroom-building –
turned out some $#%@! earlier had pelted Momma-moose with snowballs.
i hope the brain-dead twit who harassed the cow + calf was charged with manslaughter, at the very least – IMO their asinine assault was the direct cause of her later attack, that same day.
she and her calf had been on the campus without incident for over a week, at that time, and students and faculty were warned to give her + baby a wide-berth…
but i guess no-one thought to specify, *and do not THROW things at them, please… * ::rolleyes::
IMO its a damn-shame Momma-moose did not trample her original-attacker, on the spot –
as it was, an innocent person paid for their incredibly-stoopid behavior.

Yes that was on the University of Alaska campus back in 1995. The cow killed a 71 year old professor. The Alaskan Moose is much more aggressive then the Shiras Moose we have in Wyoming. You have to be careful and if you do have Cow with Calf’s it is best to get yourself out of the area, but their trip point is not as low as the Alaskan Moose.
i cannot call it up via Google searching in NEWS, but i moved to VA in 1997 and changed cities in 98 –
i know the trampled victim was after 2005, i believe it was 2008, and in the lower-48 – i think it was either Minnesota or Mich.
heres one this year –

April 19, 2010 – EXCERPT –
In Stockholm, Sweden, police say they cleared a man charged with killing his 63-year-old wife and leaving her body in the woods. The man was released when hairs and saliva from a moose were found on the victim’s clothes.
and a cranky editorial from Alaska –
http://tinyurl.com/27n5m32
about the wolf-injured moose that treed 2 Ohio tourists (shot by State-Troopers which was not even investigated) vs the 14-YO boy who shot a moose attempting to stomp his dog (which resulted in charges).

I know that moose (or as they are called in Eurasia, elks) are raised as semi-domesticated ranch animals in parts of Russia. They are even milked, much like reindeer. Is this be one of those moose?
