FC NFC CH Shelter Cove Beauty. Born 1941. Winner of the National Field Champion title in 1944. This title is given after winning the national retriever championship trial. Only one dog per year gets the title. Goldens were quite competitive in the early years of this title, winning four of the first eleven of these titles. She was the first female retriever of any breed to earn this title.
Are field Goldens still used as water dogs or are they strictly upland game dogs now?
They’re still used as both.
I have never seen a dog walk like that before. It looks very odd.
Because the dog is walking in shallow water, she is picking up her feet (rather like a high-stepping horse). She may also be transitioning into a trot, hence the use of opposite diagonals.
I work my spaniels in muddy shallow waters and they don’t high step or amble. After reading about ambling gaits in dogs I assume she’s just extremely tired after a hard run.

After having been “washed out” by another trainer, Charlie Morgan took her on, and made her National Champion. Her owner, Dr. Evans, was determined to breed another National Champion, and did so with Beauty’s grandson, NFTCh Beautywood’s Tamarack.
