   So, Max isn’t the only one. Canine Polar Bear Club?

   We’ve just had to stop taking him to one park in colder weather, because without fail he will run off and roll in the most horrible (urban) sluggish small branch-cum-drainage ditch I have ever seen. A squirt with the hose won’t get that muck off; it takes stinky Swamp Thing several good latherings on the patio before we can let him in the house, and we’ll still get whiffs of anaerobic goo for a couple of days. Not as big a deal in the summer, though it couldn’t be good for him even then. At least that’s a nice clean wallow. :)

   Typical Retriever behaviour!
   We are a gang of hunters, and we are very much into dogs (no hunting without dogs, one way or the other). We have different dogs for different purposes, but allways have a retriever among in the gang!
   If your retriever is not obsessed with water, it´s not really a retriever – atleast, please don´t breed it !

   This so typical for these breed of dogs. But it’s still odd behaviour for a canis. Wonder what is the real reason behind this behaviour, anyone has a theory (“the genes” is not enuf).

     Yet genes seem to be the main factor. Water dogs tend to be water dogs, very few of whom can resist the allure of a dip–anywhere. Several winters ago I had to rescue a neighbor’s geriatric (and way too fat) Golden out of our decorative pond. He just couldn’t resist it. (That was some cold, miserable work, lemme tell you.)

       My only caveat is that the only other dog breed I know of that likes to do this a lot is the Norwegian elkhound.

         My experience w/ Labs says that they do as well. Can’t speak to Poodles or Portuguese Water Dogs, but my neighbor’s Landseer hates the water.

       It’s some gene mutation, I suppose. Something that has weakened the cooling off system in the body – and has something to do with the nerves. So the body temperature gets easily a bit too high .
