This photo, which was obviously staged, appears in Harold Elmer Anthony’s Mammals of America (1917).
The dog’s breed is listed as an “Irish terrier,” but it looks like no Irish terrier I’ve ever heard of.
It looks a lot more like a Chihuahua, and it might be an early American Chihuahua.

Maybe it’s a terrier puppy. It’s hard to tell for sure from the photo, but does look like it could be a puppy and not a grown dog.
Speaking of dogs and skunks, anybody know anything about the Burmese (not Burnese) Mountain Dog? I presume the story is a hoax

It is a hoax. I’ve also played this game on here, for it’s not unusual to hear people call Bernese mountain dogs “Burmese mountain dogs.”
People often ask if my Tibetan Mastiff is a Burmese Mountain Dog. Well, Burma is closer to Tibet than Switzerland, but still, no ceegar! And it’s not half as entertaining as some questions. He often gets accused of being part wolf, a big husky/malamute cross, St Bernard, Rottie x GSD and my favourite, a bear on a rope.
I can’t see any chihuahua resemblance in that dog, though it’s a bad photo. It looks terrier coated and a bit like a Welsh terrier in colour as it’s saddle patterned. To my eye, it’s consistent with some of the long legged terrier breeds. Especially if it’s a hunting dog and not a show type.
I genuinely enjoy looking through on this site, it holds excellent blog posts. “Don’t put too fine a point to your wit for fear it should get blunted.” by Miguel de Cervantes.
