What to do with a sunk beaver

School history books tell about beaver trappers and the fur trade starting way back before the American Revolution. Did those guys shoot as well as trap? If so, what sort of dogs did they use? (I can’t imagine a human replacing Charlie in the above video).

  Lewis and Clark hunted beavers with their “Newfoundland” dog. and one day a beaver almost killed him by biting through one of his arteries. Beavers are dangerous game!
  
  The reason I put “Newfoundland” in quotation marks is because he is always portrayed as looking like an AKC Newfoundland, but judging from his behavior and the time period in which he was around, my guess is he was more like a St.John’s water dog or Chesapeake Bay retriever than the modern AKC Newfoundland.

    With the dog’s call name “Seaman”, that’s probably a good guess.

    Amazing how both the “cute” beavers and marmots can be so dangerous!
    I remember my grandpa telling me one of his hounds lost half his nose to a marmot. And one of my aunt’s cats lost an ear to a marmot…

      We have a marmot here, called a woodchuck or a groundhog. It is much smaller than an Alpine marmot, but they really can bite a small terrier pretty badly.
