Great to watch pairs, and even trios, of mallards waddling together around ponds big and small in woods and gardens. all looking for nest sites without any attempt at concealment as they go. Soon the most lovely sight of all when mums and ducklings go off like platoons of soldiers following the scent of the nearest river. It amazes me when families survive the many hazards enroute to arrive intact at the big waterside. but with many dangers lurking there as well.
