It’s not 100% historically accurate– the Acadians were driven out before the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. It was called Le Grand Dérangement. Remember, Acadia, the French-speaking part of the Maritimes, had been under British control since Queen Anne’s War (War of Spanish Succession).
It’s one of those songs that, as Homer Simpson once said “teaches you while you learn.”
BTW, you must sing the words in French at the end. I won’t translate them for you, because google does a better job. And in English, I don’t think it sounds quite as nice.
