If they survive and reproduce I guess it is not “a major design flaw”, is it?
It is if they get eaten by jungle cats or bush dogs when they wander down to relieve themselves.
Maybe they just don’t taste that good.
Virginia opossums rely on having unpalatable flesh.
They also play dead (go into a kind of involuntary coma), salivate, and then, if things get really bad, release a noxious green substance from their anuses.
