Beautiful animal this one too
So, I know that I’m a good several days late on commenting on this post, but I’m going to interesting, ‘cuz it raised some interesting thoughts in my head. I look at the social structure being described here (single breeding female, whose pups require feeding by the entire pack of closely genetically related individuals) and the first thing that comes to mind is the eusocial insects – ants, termites, honeybees, etc. Now, we know that it’s POSSIBLE for eusociality to evolve in mammals, thanks to the wolves’ fellow africans the naked & Damaraland mole rats. So, I’ve just gotta wonder if there’s the potential for eusociality to evolve in wolves. Obviously, our activities in the past millennia have seriously reduced any hypothetical potential, and even without that it’s still an unscientific “What If” type question, but I’m forced to ask nonetheless. The idea of eusocial wolves is just too exciting – shades of the Tines from the Vernor Vinge’s classic sci-fi novel “A Fire Upon the Deep”.
