Why will the US media be wasting so much time on the Royal wedding?

Being ruled by a constitutional monarchy looks better than electing either a soulless socialist or a religious zealot?
Oh wait… all them corgwns hypnotized and brainwashed the Americans into sucked into the royal corgwns’ plot for world dominance. I blame secret agent Sutter.
I don’t watch Lawrence O’Donell, the man behind the Progressive masturbatory fantasy that was The West Wing, but Seinfeld’s analysis here is actually directly applicable to dogs.
How many breeds would fit this observation: ‘It’s an act. An absurd dress-up. Let’s pretend these are special dogs. That’s what theater is. They love to dress-up and they love to play pretend. These aren’t special. They’re fake, phony.’
Is it any surprise that many –if not most– dog breeds come from England, that they are inbred wrecks of animals made by inbred wrecks of human beings?
We write scripts for them, pretend that it’s a documentary instead of a b-movie, and then don’t show you the film we just show you the red carpet and the awards show.
This is the sort of d*uche that insists on arguing about politics at a family barbeque or superbowl party.
I bet he thinks no one invites him out for beers because they are intimidated by his intellect.
Seeing him juxtaposed to Jerry Seinfeld was another reminder how unlikable that guy is.
I’d rather hear from him than I would hear another word about the royals.
I actually have seen the queen in person. Not as in meeting her, but I was at that “Queen’s Birthday” parade with horses they do at the Mall in London. I was within 30 feet of her.
Mark Twain wrote a short piece on this nonsense years ago, when many Americans were more inclined to suck up to them. He ends with a description of a cat siding an elephant.
Please note I’m not attacking the people of the UK.
I love the country.
The people of that country are among the nicest, most polite, most hard-working people in Europe.
However, why are we Americans worshiping an Empire from which we seceded?
It’s just very perverse if you think about it.
There are so many other things to cover. I know natives of the UK who wish they would spend some of that money from that wedding on things pertaining to the national interest, like defense or pensions.
It was a way for our “monied class” to marry off their eligible daughters. (eg: Jennie Jerome to Randolph Spencer-Churchill.)
I have no actual evidence to support this, but I was under the impression that the Royals live primarily on their own income and that the taxpayers are not stuck with things like wedding costs.
I don’t know how I ever landed in the position of Royal Apologist. I think it’s just my natural contrarian tendencies – I’ll go ahead and blame genetics for that one.
I typically enjoy O’Donnell, but I think his overwrought hand-wringing here is even more ridiculous than the media’s obsession with the royal wedding.
Lots of people are into the royal wedding simply because it provides a romantic fantasy that allows a brief escape from the drudgery of daily struggle. As long as we raise our children on a steady diet of Disney fairy tales people are going to continue to obsess over the royal family.
Personally, I don’t care much one way or another except that I can’t wait to see what Kate’s dress looks like because fashion is my guilty pleasure and it’s a simple reality that whatever she wears to church that day will probably set the tone for bridal fashion for the next decade at least.
I actually really like this.
Get Children to read some E.P. Thompson and they won’t be so fawning about monarchies.
When you read about the Enclosure and what it exactly involved, it makes your stomach churn.
Never mind the crimes of empire.
These were crimes committed against the average person in England and Wales, and later Scotland with the Highland Clearances.
Of course, I’m not saying my country is much better in its history.
Funny you should mention it, because my ancestors actually were Highlanders.
I doubt there’s a single nation in existence whose history doesn’t include some pretty ugly periods. But as much as I’m generally quick to jump on any signs of colonialist fetishism, I think the interest in the British Royals really has more to do with escapist fairy tales than any sort of nostalgic longing for the monarchy.
In the US, the royals are celebrities, no different than Paris Hilton or Tom Cruise. Fascination with the royals has far more to do with their money and excess (and scandals, people love it when the high and mighty fall) than with the fact that they used to rule us from afar. In fact, if you went to your local mall and did a survey, I’d wager that most people wouldn’t even make the connection.
The fuss that was made when Prince Charles married Diana absolutely eclipsed what is going on now, and that’s all it was, fascination with public figures and excess. Of course, you were probably not born yet.
I wasn’t born yet.
But I just think it’s rather perverse, considering all the things that are happening in the world, that we are going to go ga-ga over the monarchy we fought against in two major wars.
Major wars for us– not them!
You know that thing on Jay Leno where he goes out on the street and asks people history questions and the like, and they always get it fantastically wrong, or they don’t know, so they make stuff up? That is most people, and that is exactly how much deeper thought they put into current events, or any event, really.
You are not ‘most people.’
Of course you weren’t born yet. You’re a reincarnated soul of an American Patriot who remembered 1776 and 1812. Unfortunately, Sutter successfully sabotaged Governor Jerry Brown from delivering the memo to you on the trivial nature of the 21st century British monarchy.
Retrieverman, confessing that you were there watching the Queens’s b-day party proves that you do seem to have a well hidden, soft royalist spot in you… ;)
Btw, I beat your 30 feet record :) as I once just walked behind her after a most enjoyable field trial at Sandringham grounds…
