The RSPCA’s stance on this one is very, very wrong.

And yes, I’ve eaten squirrel meat.

I’m intrigued that the gray squirrel is more aggressive. The red ones that hang around here are just mean little buggers and run off practically anything that doesn’t fly or attempt to eat it. (Then again, some of our hummingbirds are quite aggressive as well, and will intimidate and run off other birds!)
An immediate death is not “unnecessary suffering,” and how is removal of a nonnative species “ethically questionable”? I can think of several examples in which more “unnecessary suffering” happened to the native species being forced out of their niches! I’d say the introduction of those offenders (intentional or no) was the more “ethically questionable” action.
I agree with you on this. The RSPCA tends to be a bit far out there anyway, and once again, they’ve completely gone bonkers.
The American reds here go to war with the grays. When I was growing up the reds did have some victories, but the grays just beat them.
We also have the big fox squirrels, which don’t do well against the grays. They come one at a time to the feeder, and the grays come in a gang. We have melanistic grays here, along with the normal color. They come in an family group and drive the fox squirrels out.
