The owner is basically rewarding the dog for aggression.
There are two schools of thought on what to do here:
1. Koehler/Cesar Millan– throw his ass on the ground and stand over him like a wolf. This works, but there is a good chance you’ll get bitten, perhaps badly. My main critique with Cesar Millan isn’t that it doesn’t work. It does. It’s just that it’s very easy to get into a dangerous situation where a person could get badly injured. Further, as per Millan’s views on energy, most people have a hard time getting that particular essence he’s talking about. I know I do.
2. The Dodman/McConnell model– “Smith Barney” plan for dogs. Make him work for everything–food, toys, attention. And never allow this dog to get on the furniture or under a table. It does take longer, but the chances of getting badly bitten are lessened.
I would also add walking this dog hard several times a day or something else to wear him out.
Now, I’ve never had an aggressive golden retriever. I didn’t know they could snarl until recently.
That lady’s lucky she still has that hand. Geez. I’d be embarrassed if my dog were acting like that, not filming it and putting it on YouTube for the world to see. Ban stupid people, not dogs.

And the Puppy Probation / NILIF regimens long predate Pat McConnell or Nick Dodman — the latter would pump the dog up with Prozac.
Which, actually, might be a kindness given the human he has to live with.

I’d never tolerate my dog doing that… my previous dogs were Rotts, and they never behaved in such a way! How can people think that’s cute?!
Geeze, these dogs are giving off more than enough warning signals that people just don’t pay attention to. I can not believe the stupidity of some people. Most dogs will give off ample amount of warning before ever touching human skin, but many people are just too dumb/oblivious to realize it, and then say that they have no idea why the dog bit them or someone else. I am surprised that no one got seriously injured here.
I had a friend who’s mother had a vicious golden, a truly mean dog and this dog did damage, ripped the woman’s arm wide open (and if I remember correctly, it was a larger set, lighter colour golden, like most of the ones that I see around here).
The dogs in these videos are showing a lot of restraint considering the “teasing” and “prodding” that these people are doing. So who knows if these dogs are truly “aggressive” or are just fed-up with idiots who absolutely lack any sense when handling a dog.
I couldn’t even watch to the end. That woman is a complete and utter idiot. And it’s her dog who will pay with her life if she bites that stupid woman.
Where DO these people get the idea that this is cute?

It amazes me in an exchange with one of these owners that they think this is okay.
When I explain that my own dogs aren’t even possessive over their food and even share the same recreational bones, they don’t get it. This is not normal golden retriever behavior, nor should it ever become golden retriever behavior. People need to breed for a superior temperament in these dogs, and they need to be trained and socialized. The supposed “safe” breeds need even more rigorous selection for temperament because laypeople become complacent in training these dogs, thinking that if they just feed a golden, it will be a safe dog.
But golden retrievers are developing a reputation as biters. No one is going nuts to ban them, but if a bully breed acted even slightly like this, people would be demanding its euthanasia. No, scratch that– people would be demanding its public hanging.

The first dog I was ever bittne by as a kid was a Golden Retriever in the early 80s- I was 4 and it scared me off big dogs until my late teens (and Goldens until last year when I worked with Cyrus. Still working on the ‘rents about their next dog though- I don’t have room for one in my own house!)
First, may I alpha roll and scruff shake that idiot! She shouldn’t be allowed to own a fish!
I’m not familiar with Koehler. The problem I have with the Cesar Millan / old “New Skete” approach is that in some dogs it may bring about fear biting. My Goldens have been pretty sensitive boys, and they would just get frightened by that stuff. Cesar is on TV all the time. I worry about a lot of owners getting wrong-headed ideas from him. He’s working with dogs with very select problems. I do think he loves dogs & is very calm. I agree it’s hard to access that kind of energy, especially 24/7.
My great-great aunt bred chows (around the turn of the last century) as companions for little old ladies. If one of her dogs had a so-called aggressive temperament, she took it out in the woods & shot it. Certainly didn’t breed it.
But this is not ethical today. So one has to take responsibility for the life of the dogs one culls.
I think a lot of pit bull aggression travels down the leash, so to speak, as well as just coming from incredibly crappy breeding. I had 2 teenage boys over yesterday, saying, “Oh, it would be so cool to have a pit bull. Hey how about a pit bull crossed with a mastiff?!” I had to stop myself from shrieking! I now own one boy’s dog because he and his girlfriend didn’t have a place to keep it. It was supposed to be a pit bull, obviously wasn’t (looks like a setter/pointer), and that disappointed him. The other boy is great with my Lab mix, he’s obviously an athletic retriever-boy. But the pit bull just goes with the hip-hop & baggy, low-riding jeans to these guys. Just like a Maltese goes with a Vuitton purse & stilleto heels. Jeez!
My previous Golden, a big red boy, snarled at one person in his life. My car was broken down on the highway in Ohio at night & some weirdo came up to it. His hackles went up & he growled that guy away. Then the tow truck guy came up & he wagged his tail.
He also tried to kill a Llasa that bit him in the testicles. Most guys would agree that that was fair?
I myself have only been bitten by cats….
