Don’t ask me the species. When it comes to herps, I am good with only snakes and lizards. I’m from West Virginia, we just don’t have that many aquatic turtle species, and I’ve never taken the trouble to learn all of them.

A person walking along this pond tends to bring out a kind of Pavlovian stimulus in these turtles.
They come rushing in all directions. Last year, some of the larger ones would come out almost onto the bank and beg for food in a very canine fashion.
I think the numbers of children trying to catch them to take home as souvenirs put an end to that behavior.
