did it run up and back to/from the water? that’s a key distinguishing behavior
It’s some kind of sandpiper.
And yes, these birds run back and forth the whole time.
The location may be a bit off, though.
Sanderlings are found in South Carolina only during the winter…
Piping plovers?
They are possibly related to a much short-peaked, but in the same type of environment living sea shore bird, charadrius hiaticula.
More of those sea shore birds, namely Charadrius – always in the water but not more than up to knees

Or rather it could be a Calidris minuta, which would be a good poang, since it is quite rare.
