   Suzzane’s dogs. Rumpus’s daughter Lisa is one of my favorites, owned by a friend out here who bred and owned his great-grandfather, and Lava’s brother Remington is one of the few harls to finish with his ears still on; I wrote an article for the Dane magazine that featured him and some of the others.

   They’re also “the Lady Gaga Danes,” but trust me that that’s not what anybody is most proud of! Lava looks fantastic for nine or ten, doesn’t she?

   We have that circular dog bed. It’s from Costco. Nice bed.

   And it’s pretty sad that Rumpus only made it to 4-5 years. I just couldn’t do that. You hardly get to know them. It’s kind of like feeding a regular dog for a lifetime but only getting their company for a handful of years. That’s so sad.

   I am a “better to have loved and lost” type myself and have adopted several older dogs, one of which lived 2 years and another only 3-1/2. Still, I was glad for the time I had with them and honestly as I get older death gets easier to accept. Something about practice.

   But I was always sad when the time came to slaughter our beefs–all that work and effort developing a trusting relationship and then BOOM! off to the abattoir they go! However, their time in our freezer was very much appreciated.
