This is really depressing, but it’s still worth watching.
I remember one episode where they were going down the river, and Sui catches wind of a feral pig on the river bank. She jumps into the river and catches the pig, holding it there for her master to catch.
Of course, this happened in crocodile invested water, and Steve Irwin pulls up and separates the two. While he’s doing that, he has is eye on the water, hoping that no saltwater croc is slinking up in the shallows.
Quite show, I must admit.
There will ever be another nature show quite like this. No one really had the ability to court such controversy and keep on making these films.
And to be honest, that’s probably the way things should be. Poisonous snakes and crocodiles aren’t meant to be handled.
my all-time FAVORITE self-generated Moment of high-drama:
*terri + *steve are trying to trap a huge rogue-croc, a salty over 15-ft long who has been threatening fisherman + taking domestic animals – they want to transplant him before somebody blows a hole in his big head.
its night-time, dark as a cave, and they are returning to check the trap; Sui + both her owners are in a CANOE – not a craft notorious for stability;
* steve * spots a SNAKE on a down-hanging branch, and nothing will satisfy him but to see it up-close; its mildly-venomous, and he is hanging onto the lower-end of the branch and STANDING to talk about this critter, with the camera trained on him.
meanwhile, the river + the canoe are *moving* –
and the branch suddenly BREAKS under the increasing tension, throwing *steve and Sui into the water!!, leaving the BRANCH and the SNAKE in the canoe… with *terri.
OMG – what a scramble! they get *steve out of the water, and get the snake out of the canoe, then realize Sui is Missing –
this is not good.
they call her, + she barks – the dog had brains-enuf to save herself, struck out for shore, and is running back + forth, waiting impatiently for the canoe to come retrieve her.
*steve: 10-points off
Sui: 10-points ADDED,
God knows she would not have lived as long if she had not watched out for herself –
*steve couldn;t be trusted to watch-out for *himself*, let alone anyone else; if there was any limit, he HAD to push it.
its a shame he died young, but it was virtually inevitable;
he said himself he would never blame the animal if he died (pestering and provoking – MY words) some non-human,
it would be all his own fault –
too bad others did not listen to him, as many giant-stingrays were killed shortly after his death, in *retribution* by various eejits.
i thought the animals were interesting, and i thought
(and still think) *steve* was bonkers, LOL – and i HAVE caught snakes in the wild, stalked and touched a wild-duck and a whitetail-doe, etc.

I can’t watch it. She was a good old dog. Somehow I think she and Cesar’s Daddy have found themselves at the Rainbow Bridge.

The last 90 seconds of the final clip are awesome. Regardless of the show’s controversy, I think it’d be impossible to argue that Steve and Sui didn’t have an admirable bond. And both led some pretty interesting lives.
They both are missed.
I was going to post the video where he’s crying over a dead crocodile.
He truly loved animals. I will say that about him.
