This little black and tan dog is a Chinese crested dog.
Of the powderpuff variety.
It is of a very atypical coat.
It appears in the AKC educational video that demonstrates the breed standard. It is not a good example of a powderpuff.
Pai thinks this dog is a throwback to the toy Manchester terrier that was crossed into the Crested dog strains.
I also think it is a good example of the close relationship between Chihuahuas, especially the deer-headed types, and the hairless dogs from Latin America– which is where the hairless dogs originated.
Black and tan is also a common color in Xolos. When you go back far enough in Crested history, the two breeds overlap and shorter crests were tolerated in the early days so shorter coats could still appear from time to time.
Short-coated Powderpuffs were not unknown in the 80s and earlier. If any appeared nowadays I’d say they’re the result of more recent secret crossbreeding.
Any other pix of that one? Its legs are definitely the more cobby Crestie type legs.
If not for the too short legs, it could pass as a coated xolo or a techichi aka as “deer type Chis” as the color is right. Deer type chis have long legs. Deer head chis can have shorter legs. This is definitely just a ‘deer head”
I know that in the plains areas, at least, the small dots above the eyes were/are sought after as belonging to “wisdom” dogs and valued. We used to call them “magic spots”, and you rub them like a Buddha’s belly, though larger and more tan/gold spots are the most preferred.
