   Seems like they should be taupe.
   I don’t think I’ll settle for that site’s answer since they’re still pups. Lippizaners are black when they’re born and look where that gets them!

     I think the dilution gene is recessive in Weims, and because goldens are almost always black dogs that can’t produce black pigment on their fur, my guess is they will stay black.

     Blue weims are black dogs with the recessive dilution gene. Regular weims are diluted livers.

     90 percent or more of goldens are actually black dogs with a recessive gene that prevents them from developing black pigment on their fur.

     Some goldens have brown skin. These are really chocolate/liver dogs with the recessive gene the prevent brown coloration from appearing on their fur.

   I know this is a puppy, but this is the HOUNDIEST retriever mix I’ve every seen.

   If you like your retrievers looking like hound dogs, this seems to be sheer brilliance.

   I guessed right, btw. I almost NEVER get the color questions right–just got lucky.

   That is a really handsome dog. That color was definitely not my first guess though. I would love to find out whether the dogs flush, point or do some useless combination of the two.

   It’s all about the E. Most golden retrievers are black.

     Yep. Miley is very black. She has very strong dark pigment and such light fur that when the fur on her toes is wet, it looks like she has dirt on them. I spent a half hour trying to wash the “dirt” off of her toes!

   There are some dogs that are born black and turn grayish or sliver.

   Silver poodles.

   Kerry blue terriers.

   Does anyone know the genetics of either of these colors?

   From the late Dr. Armstrong’s “Color Genes in the Poodle” – “My own study of standard poodle pedigrees is consistent with the interpretation that gray and silver are separate genes. To avoid confusion, let’s call the silver gene V . This gene shows incomplete dominance. In other words, if a poodle that is VV would be black, Vv would be a dark blue-gray and vv would be silver. Both blues and silvers are born black. Silvers “clear” during the first year. This involves the gradual loss of pigmentation from about 90% of the inner coat (hairs become transparent or white, depending on thickness), but a substantial percentage of the outer, guard hairs retain some color.” http://www.canine-genetics.com/pdlcolor.html

   Skin that has been wounded produces black hair on a silver poodle, no matter the age. And it ultimately clears, again, to silver.

   I’m going to say Black with Blue trait carriers or Black with Silver trait carriers.

   The Black is dominant in Weims and a Blue, which is a diluted Black, will yield all black pups when bred to a Silver or Diluted Liver Weim. A Silver to a Silver will yield Silvers or depending on the recessives it passible that a mixed litter will result. And therefore Black will likely come through in the Goldens? But it could go either way I guess,,, depends on the color of the Weimaraner…. If it’s the Silver variant it could go either way, again depending on whether the Weim is a complete Silver or silver with the Blue carrier.

   What you really need to do once the litter has been born is start to select candidates to breed for another litter…. then bring an F2 litter into the world down the road to see if the recessives show through.

   Then the same can apply to the Blue Weims…. depends on the fact of whether its a complete blue or a blue with the silver as well?

   So… Unless you know the WEIM half of the mix it really could go either way. Black is dominant however. And since the Golden is really a Black dog…. You would likely see Black pups. If you want other colors as a possibility….. then you need to look towards the Flat Coats or the Labs. ;-)

     Now lets see if we can create a Silver Flattie after all. ;-)
