Caravan hound, Indian. They are actually really interesting. I have pictures of smooths that are very extreme looking, quite distinct in appearance from Salukis, but the feathered ones I have seen look very Saluki-like. They are pretty variable in appearance. There are a number of Indian sighthounds, usually associated with specific regions. It would very interesting to collect DNA and see how they are related, and how they’re related to the sighthounds in China (Xigou) and farther West.

If you get up early in the morning and Scottie posts early in the morning, you can always beat me. I’m a late riser ;)

These sighthound questions don’t even get an answer post.

          Jess got it.

It’s a Caravan hound or Mudhol hound.

I don’t know how they would do in a mudhole, however.

For mudholes you want the smooth version, the mud just flakes off when it dries.

I would say Mudhol hound or Caravan Hound,it could be even a Rapur hound because to me this it is just a terminology’controversy.
An useless controversy that I rather leave to the breedist people and their cosmetic fights.
In my opinion the dog on the pics belong to that population of sighthound that was brought into the Indian subcontinent during the muslim conquest from Persia and central Asia
The Moghul developed in India the culture of hunting with the sighthounds that later were greatly apreciated by the British.
Those dogs are the local phenotype, the indian “speaker” for that landrace that in the western world it is conditioned in several artificially created breed :saluqui, slougui, afgan hound….
This attitude it is completly irrealistic because it does not help to preserve the historical and real thing :the sighthound landrace linked with the muslim conquest in Asia and North Africa.
I’m italian/french you retrieverman, you are white american,we speake different languages but it is obvious that both of us are representative of the european race and the western world.
Why it could not be so simple also for the historical working dogs population?
I hope that you can understand my bad english, sorry for the effort needed.
    Very good blog keep on.
    Regards, Gianluca
