     LOL.

     She wrote the first standard for the breed and was very instrumental in getting the breed recognized as a distinct breed from the flat-coat.

   Mrs Charlesworth was, indeed, “mannish”. Her appearance at early field trials wearing trousers was considered quite scandalous. Also, it was not usual for women then to train and handle their own dogs. With her short haircut and strong features (as well as a rather forceful personality), she was rather different than the norm for women of the time.

   Or perhaps she was just several decades ahead of the times!

   I’ve got an oil painting of a pointer dog and it was signed by M W Charlesworth, 1898. Did she also do artwork? This was handed down to me by my mother but I have little history on it and I would love to find out more information.

   Any info. anyone may have would be greatly appreciated. Thx

     Her full name was “Winifred Maud Charlesworth.”

     So the initials are reversed.

     hmmm.

   Retrieverman: Thanks so much for responding. I guess I got caught up in my google searching and in the process, got the initials all wrong. Looks like it’s an entirely different person. After your post, you had me wondering so I checked again and it’s H M Charlesworth, 1898. There may be some relationship because of last name and interest in dogs however, looks like I need to do some more investigating.

   Mrs w.m.Charlesworth was my great aunt and of a strong personalty who founded the Golden retriever Club. Her Dogs were also founding stock of the dogs that we love today

     I contend that she’s actually person who created the golden retriever as we know it today.
